The film circled around the two main characters, Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo. I’d use the characters’ names but it their acting was just so horrible that it seemed that those two were just playing their own personas. Daniel’s dad got into an air crash and Daniel met Kathryn in his journey to find his dad. While that happened, they got time to explore the past love life of their parents. She’s Dating the Gangster is at its best when it allows kids to be kids. Its portrayal of young, intensely romantic love is really charming, especially placed as it is in this wacky conception of its period setting. It’s a bit of a shame that the story had to try so hard to bring big, mortal choices into the picture. The bleak seriousness of the film’s climactic moments clash heavily with its mostly colorful aesthetic. Still, the movie holds together long enough to entirely charming, if not entirely effective.
Kenji asks his son what caused him to feel this way, and he answers that he knows about the other Athena. Disappointed, Kenji says that Kenneth has no idea how much he loves him and his mother. She’s Dating the Gangster is clearly no work of Shakespeare, nor does it aspire to be.
Athena has to pretend to be his girlfriend in order to get Abi jealous. Athena eventually gives in when Kenji attempts to commit suicide by jumping from the school’s rooftop if she does not accept. The next day at school, Athena is treated like a princess with Kenji providing her bodyguards. Jealous, some girls at the school start bullying her. Kenji confronts them and says that no one hurts his girlfriend.
I want my heroine to be strong and fierce and not become a noble idiot. A few fleeting months are not worth a lifetime of regret, especially when you’ve been given the opportunity to change it.
